India vs West Indies First ODI at Nagpur
INDIA WEST INDIES First ODI Nagpur : West Indies fall short in thriller; IND 1-0
Jan 21, 2007
West Indies and Shivnarine Chanderpaul in particular battled bravely, but in the end fell short of their victory target of 339 in a one-day thriller with India where there were runs in abundance. The West Indies batsmen never gave up in pursuit of the total and they needed 20 runs from the final over, but Chanderpaul's brilliant unbeaten 149 proved to be in vain as the hosts sealed victory by 14 runs. The left-hander hit 16 fours and three sixes in his knock which came off 136 balls, while the aggregate of 662 runs made it the highest-scoring ODI ever staged in India. For India, former skipper Sourav Ganguly, back in India's one-day squad after 16 months on the sidelines, made a superb 98, and his innings was followed by 11.5 over - 119 run partnership by Dhoni (62) and Dravid (54). Gambhir made 69 in the 144 first wicket partnership with Ganguly. Tendulkar made 31 before being LBW to Gayle.
Earlier, West Indies won the toss at Nagpur and elected to field first. Reported Earlier: Sachin Tendulkar will bat in the middle order in the first one-dayer against the West Indies in Nagpur as India attempt to find a winning combination ahead of the World Cup. The poor performance forced the selectors to drop opener Virender Sehwag and all-rounder Irfan Pathan for the first two games against the West Indies. The focus will be on former captain Saurav Ganguly, returning to the one-day side after 16 months. He will open the innings with Gautam Gambhir in today's match.
The Nagpur one-day international is the first of the four ODIs, which is being played at the Vidarbha Cricket Association ground at Nagpur on Sunday.
